Sitting up straight, standing tall and "bending at the knees" don't always keep people safe. Sometimes the stresses of modern life, carelessness, haste and forgetfulness cause strains and pains. It's no fun, especially when it interferes with mobility, life and comfort.
Being aware of how you sit, stand, lift and move is the first step to ensuring a healthy spine, and avoiding those actions that can send you to your bed -- or to your doctor. Many people have never really been taught proper techniques; some even go through life thinking that an occasional strain or sprain simply "go with the territory."
It does not have to be that way.
Our chiropractor in Alexandria "has your back," and our caring staff will teach you how to alleviate any pain you may be experiencing through natural, non-invasive procedures. Chiropractors, massage therapists and treatment specialists will help you deal with spinal misalignment, alleviate chronic pain symptoms that might signal other conditions, or speed your recovery from an injury or accident.
Whether our adjustment techniques are part of a comprehensive regimen, or only a single treatment, we employ state-of-the-art tools and procedures to treat lower back pain, neck and shoulder stiffness, headaches, postural changes due to pregnancy, sports injuries and auto accident discomfort. Back to Health Center is dedicated to "whole person" treatment, and we have a wealth of experience in kinesiology, Eastern and Western medicine, cranio-sacral therapy, massage and natural childbirth. We also are experienced pediatric chiropractors.
Our overriding goal is to address all your needs, assisting our clients achieve their goals of lasting health. An important part of our practice involves counseling patients, from nutrition needs to proper posture, relaxation and exercise techniques, including yoga. We suggest ways to sit and move in the work environment that can relieve tension, counteract the ill-effects of long-term deskwork and prevent injuries caused by reaching, lifting or "overdoing."
Just as beneficial exercise should not be so strenuous that it hurts, there is very little reason to endure chronic pain or repetitive injury that is easy to prevent. Keeping your spine aligned is a matter of awareness. Stand in front of a mirror to check your posture. Stand tall and consciously stretch your head up towards the ceiling. Then check your reflection: Follow an imaginary line from your earlobe to your ankle. The line should run straight through your shoulder, hip, and knee. If it does not, be conscious of the goal, and practice.
Walking is only a bit more difficult. Keep your chin tucked in, your shoulders back and your stomach in. Step out and land on the balls of your feet, look ahead, swing your arms gently to the rhythm of your pace, and wear shoes with arch support.
Lifting? That's right, bend at the knees, keep your back straight, hold the load close to your chest, and don't try to be a superhero!
