Frequently Asked Questions about Chiropractic Care in Alexandria

Here at Back to Health Center in Alexandria, we understand that you have questions about the types of chiropractic care offered at our clinic and how they can help you. Our chiropractor has compiled a list of common questions and would be happy to answer any additional questions when you schedule your initial consultation.

What is Chiropractic?

It is a healthcare discipline that helps people enjoy optimal health through a healthy spine. Chiropractors diagnose and correct spinal subluxations—places where the vertebrae are misaligned. Because the spine encloses the spinal cord (the superhighway of your nervous system) misaligned vertebrae can compress discs and pinch nerves, which causes pain and dysfunction in numerous areas of the body. Our chiropractors' gentle, precise spinal adjustments realign these vertebrae, freeing pinched nerves. Chiropractic is a proactive, drug-free, non-invasive system—we can help patients maintain healthy posture and treat small subluxations before they start causing trouble!

What types of chiropractic treatment can I expect at your Alexandria office?

We offer a range of non-invasive and minimally invasive treatment options for children, adults and seniors, including acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments, cold laser therapy, massage therapy and physical medicine. All of these treatments can help you heal and rehabilitate after an injury.

What is a chiropractic adjustment and what does it treat?

A chiropractic adjustment is a treatment option that is designed to promote proper function of your vertebrae and extremity joints. When our chiropractor performs a chiropractic adjustment, she uses a quick, specific impluse on the affected joint.

What happens during a spinal adjustment?

After diagnosing a subluxation via physical examination and x-rays, one of our experienced chiropractors will apply gentle thrust pressure, either with the hands or an instrument, to quickly, gently work the vertebrae back into correct alignment.

How did I get a subluxation?

Subluxations (misalignments of the vertebrae) can happen in any number of ways, but there are two general categories: those that happen gradually, and those that happen suddenly. Subluxations that come on gradually usually happen due to poor posture habits like slouching at your desk, sleeping on a too firm or too soft mattress, etc. Sudden subluxations usually come via accident: a car accident injury, sports injury or personal injury like slipping and falling on a wet floor. Any of these things can twist, drag or bump vertebrae out of alignment and lead to anything from back pain, neck pain, TMJ and headaches to sciatica, fatigue, allergies, carpal tunnel syndrome, etc.

Are spinal adjustments painful?

No; in fact, spinal adjustments are usually a great source of pain relief to our patients. Once the adjustment releases a pinched nerve, it can be like flipping the off-switch for pain.

What types of chiropractic techniques do your chiropractors use?

Our chiropractors are trained and experienced in the Cox Technique, Diversified Technique, Thompson Technique and the Gonstead Technique. We also perform motion palpitation.

What conditions does chiropractic care treat?

Chiropractic care treats a wide variety of musculoskeletal injuries from lower back pain and Fibromyalgia to certain forms of arthritis. We also treat sports injuries and repetitive motion injuries, including carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, runner's knee, whiplash and herniated discs.

What types of massage do you offer?

We offer a wide-range of massage techniques to help you relax and facilitate healing. Our massage therapist offers Swedish, hot stone, deep tissue, sports and prenatal massages. We also offer reflexology massages.

Is chiropractic a safe way to treat back pain?

Absolutely! Because we use natural techniques that encourage the body to use its own healing functions (a properly-communicating nervous system), it is safe for just about everyone—including the pregnant women, elderly patients, children and other people for whom drug therapies and more invasive procedures would be just too risky.

How did you become a Doctor of Chiropractic?

Each of our chiropractors started with a passion for helping people get healthy naturally. They are each fully-educated, deeply-experienced doctors of chiropractic. In order to earn their licenses, they actually had to study hundreds more hours than most medical doctors, particularly in the areas of neurology, anatomy, orthopedics and physiology. So they are extensively qualified to diagnose and alleviate musculoskeletal conditions and injuries as well as many other conditions related to nervous system imbalances through non-invasive, drug-free chiropractic adjustments and other complementary therapies.
